No risk on waste or failure costs!

IJburg is a large-scale urban development project on the outskirts of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Where the territory of Amsterdam reaches the IJsselmeer, the biggest lake of the Netherlands, a major urban extension with a size of 220 ha and a population of more than 22.000 is being developed on artificial islands which have been raised from the lake. This means that the existing natural functions and requirements of the water system needed to be taken into consideration in the development of the district. Both the first phase of IJburg and the second phase, in enhanced form, seek to work in harmony with the surroundings; an extraordinarily high density of up to 90 homes per hectare, ensuring preservation of the quality of the water in the IJsselmeer, alongside a high aesthetic appeal. Because the development is on islands, which also have waterways cutting through them, then naturally water has to be a main consideration when developing the site.

Challenge

Via Milder, producer and importer of plastic pipe systems, Walraven received the request to develop a pipe support system. For this project ground-coupled heat exchanger systems were installed for residential use and large diameter PE pipe-work had to be constructed for the transportation of heat and cold water. Ground-coupled heat exchangers use the earth’s near constant subterranean temperature to warm or cool the water, a viable and economical alternative or supplement to the conventional central heating in the properties of this project.

The solution

Revit® & BIM® for high quality pipe support design

One of the main reasons why Kersten Retail, the main contractor of this project, selected Walraven as supplier was that, besides their technical expertise, our technical engineers use Revit® software for their designs. Using Revit® software our engineers produce consistent, coordinated and complete model-based designs and documentation. By using the integrated BIM specifying the Walraven products they can develop effective and high quality pipe support solutions for the diverse pipe installations and detect clashes on-time. This does not only result in safety and ease of use, but also prevents waste, failure costs and expensive corrective measures. For the IJburg project our engineers created the pipe support design in a separate Revit® file that linked to the master file that Kersten Retail sent to us, specifying the building- and installation design of the project. Once approved, the solution drawings were communicated to our in-house prefabrication service department for assembly. The design ensured fast and precise assembly, ensuring time and cost saving on site.

What makes this project also real special is that the Walraven Aerofoam® NBR insulation rolls and sheets were applied. This highly efficient closed cell foam offers high thermal efficiency and protection from imminent condensation problems. Due to the little space at the building area the insulation company decided to first apply the Walraven Aerofoam® NBR insulation on the PE pipes and the distributors of the installation and then transport the prefabricated parts to the construction site. Not an easy job. Due to the excellent mechanical strength of the Walraven Aerofoam® NBR insulation foam nothing was damaged and the high insulation value was retained. No need for repairs, no loss of time!

Very recently a Mechanical & Electrical contractor was working on a project in Cardiff.  This project was for an internal pipe installation running the full height of a stairwell, this required some creative thinking. However, a cost effective, smart solution was provided by Walraven.

The installation problem

The entire length of the riser pipes needed to be supported.  However, neither the pipework or its support could intrude on the actual stairwell.  The solution required an original, bespoke design. smart solution

The solution

The Walraven UK Technical Team worked closely with the client to design and calculate a bespoke vertical box frame. This bespoke design was constructed on site with the added benefit of on site consultation from our team.  The frame was bolted to the floor and landings, allowing the frame to support the pipes without any intrusion on the stairwell.

Products Used

  • Walraven RapidStrut® channel System
  • Walraven Hammerfix
  • Walraven 2s Clamp
  • Walraven PushStrut

Thames-Tower-Reading-001The M&E contractor working on the Thames Tower high rise office block in Reading required advice about how to effectively support the rooftop services coming from the plant room. Walraven were approached to provide a technical design solution which was taken forward and implemented with great success.

The Problem

This was a rooftop installation project to support very heavy pipework. The solution had to take into account several factors:Thames-Tower-close-up-Yeti

  • It had to be suitable for outdoor use
  • Take into account the thermal expansion of the pipework it would be supporting
  • Allow for a non-penetrative roof design
  • Be easy to install in a confined space

The Solution

Thames-Tower-Tech-drawingOur technical support team provided drawings and load calculations to recommend a combination of Walraven installation systems. This was followed up with a toolbox talk on-site.

The Walraven Maxx profile system is perfectly suited to supporting heavy pipework and is suitable for outdoor use. Used in combination with our expansion guides, the pipes would be effectively supported whilst allowing for thermal expansion. To provide a non-penetrative rooftop attachment, our Walraven Yeti® rooftop support feet were used.

Thames-Tower-Frame-upThe Walraven Maxx profile is a flexible, heavy rail system that is safe, secure and corrosion resistant. It is suitable for many applications and is quick and easy to install without the need for on-site fabrication or welding – perfect for confined spaces.

Abell and Cleland is a prestigious residential development in the heart of Westminster. The developers required a fire stop solution suitable for expanding and contracting pipework within the high rise building.

The problem

Large pipework in the basement required supports allowing for expansion, as well as fire stopping of the pipe penetrations through firewalls to ensure safety of fire escape routes. There were a number of different substrates and arrangements that required solutions, along with the added issue of pipe expansion and contraction. If pipe expansion and contraction is not correctly considered when installing a fire stop, the movement of the pipe could render the fire stop ineffective over time.

The Fire Stop Solution

Walraven’s range of fixing points and slide guides were ideal for fixing the large pipework system, whilst allowing it to expand and contract. The Walraven Pacifyre® MKII Fire Sleeve was recommended for fire stopping. It is unique in that it allows pipes to expand and contract without compromising the effectiveness of the fire stopping – unlike fire collars which hold pipework static, preventing the pipe from expanding freely, potentially resulting in failure. Walraven provided technical advice, design solutions and on site support for this project.

Heatcare provides luxury care homes for the elderly in south England, and have worked with Walraven for many years. project-care-homes-en1They are one of the UK’s most highly-respected and accredited contractors working in the care industry, building a reputation for high quality design, delivery and engineering expertise. Heatcare are committed to providing technical excellence, quality workmanship and a highly reliable service.

The problem

Heatcare asked us to work with them to find a way to speed up the installation process for the mechanical services througout their care home projects.  Given the number of projects they work on, the cumulative benefits are potentially substantial.

The solutionproject-care-homes-en4

We recommended our Walraven RapidRail® fixing rail system as it offered a fast and flexible solution. This included our green-lined clips which are perfectly suited to plastic pipe systems where expansion is expected.

With the added benefit of pre-fabrication in our own factory, we could deliver pre-assembled units for immediate installation. To achieve this, we carried out a full design take-off, including calculations for the entire building, taking into account factors such as the expansion needed for the services when differences in temperature occur.

Collaboration is important in these kinds of projects early in the process to ensure accurate exchange of information so that suitable designs can be made. The correct information is critical to make sure that the pre-fabricated systems fit perfectly to the final site conditions.

At a care home location in London, the entire ground floor was installed in 1.5 days.  Normally this would take 1 to 2 weeks. Gavin Hayes – Project Manager at Heatcare commented:

“Walraven RapidRail® fixing rail is our preferred bracketry system for installation projects. project-care-homes-en3It’s a great quality product that is fast and easy to install. We have saved over 150hrs installation times using this product range. We have also used Walraven’s design, take-off and pre-fab services which helped the project run very smoothly. We would highly recommend Walraven products and services”.

Avantor in Gliwice (Poland) delivers chemical products and materials for laboratories. The installation of their business premises provided some interesting challenges,avantor3 which Walraven were able to professionally resolve.

The problem

There was very little space to work, for which a solution had to be found. Properly functioning ventilation ducts had to be installed. But we could not attach them to the floor or walls. Therefore Avantor asked Walraven for help

Walravens’ solutionavantor2

Our ‘normal’ solutions Walraven Yeti and Walraven Urus could not be used here, therefore we opted for our heaviest system: Walraven Maxx. With this system we installed the big ventilation ducts above each other in layers. These were attached to the main substructure of the building because the floor and walls were not available.

We produce the materials used ourselves, which meant we could supply everything to the location at Avantor within 48 hours. This saved the customer a lot of time. Besides our speed of service, Avantor were also very pleased about the fact that we fully prepared and completed everything ourselves. From estimating to execution, we provided all the information and performed all the work.
