Solar panel installation without roof perforation

What initially appeared to be a straightforward solar panel installation without roof perforation at the Vega de San Mateo secondary school in Gran Canaria required a different approach once the existing roof structure was assessed. Walraven developed a bespoke support solution that enabled the installation of photovoltaic panels without perforating the roof.

Protecting an ageing roof

During an on-site visit, it became clear that the school’s existing roof required special care. Due to the age and condition of the roof, preventing any perforation of the roof surface was a key requirement.

The challenge was to install the photovoltaic system while preserving the integrity of the roof and ensuring the safety of both the building and its occupants.

Non-perforating support solution

Walraven’s engineering team designed a bespoke fixing system that avoided drilling into the roof by securing the structure to the sides of the building instead.

Using components from the Walraven RapidStrut® range, together with rails, welded supports and fixing elements, Walraven created a robust and durable support structure without the need to drill holes in the roof deck.

To ensure long-term performance, Walraven supplied key components with Walraven BIS UltraProtect 1000® surface protection, providing enhanced corrosion resistance and durability.

Preserving the roof structure

Thanks to Walraven’s rooftop support solution, the photovoltaic installation was completed without any roof perforation. The result is a safe, durable solar support structure that protects the existing roof while enabling the school to benefit from renewable energy generation.
