Heavy Industrial Flyover Platform – Solving Access & Installation Challenges with Walraven Maxx

Published on: 16 April 2025

The challenge

In a large boiler hall, the customer faced a critical late‑stage challenge: building a platform structure for six pumps, complete with grating, safety barriers, and installations — all in an area packed with existing piping and electrical systems. The challenge was to prepare a solution that could be assembled without interfering with the existing piping and electrical installations in the area, while maintaining adequate access to the equipment and fittings designed for the area.

Solution

To overcome these constraints, Walraven engineers developed a tailor‑made platform using the Walraven Maxx system — a bolted, modular heavy‑duty system designed specifically for large, high‑load industrial structures. The platform is composed of the flyover, located 6 metres above the floor, the walls, and the hall floor. The choice of mounting locations for the structure was dictated by the area’s communication needs and the flyover’s load-bearing capacity.

Walraven engineers developed a platform solution that supports a characteristic design load of 4 kN/m², enabling the installation of piping and electrical systems, as well as service access. It measures approximately 6 m by 12 m. The platform is 3 m above the floor.

Solutions from the Walraven Maxx system were used – profiles up to MX150 (100x150x4.0) and the Walraven RapidStrut® system, used as an aid in preparing grating, barriers and substructures for installations and equipment.

The use of a bolted fastening system allowed for convenient installation of the platform, connecting to existing pipe installations without concern for potential minor collisions.
