Why use Britclips cable clips with metal saddles instead of plastic?

Cable clips with metal cable saddles are often used in UK electrical installations now because they offer significantly better fire safety performance and durability than plastic alternatives. In the event of a fire, plastic fixings can melt or fail rapidly, allowing cables to fall. Collapsed cables pose a serious risk as they can obstruct escape routes and hinder firefighters, increasing danger during evacuation and rescue.

Metal fixings mandatory in escape routes

To address this risk, the UK Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) introduced specific requirements aimed at preventing premature cable collapse. Regulation 521.10.202 of the 18th Edition states that wiring systems above escape routes must be supported so they are not liable to collapse in a fire. Beyond fire conditions, metal saddles also provide far greater long-term strength and durability than plastic alternatives. They are more resistant to impact, vibration, and environmental effects such as heat, ageing, or UV exposure. Plastic saddles can become brittle or deform over time, especially in lofts, garages, plant rooms, or commercial settings where temperatures and mechanical stress are higher. Metal fixings maintain consistent support, ensuring that cables remain properly secured throughout the life of the installation.

While clips with plastic saddles are still suitable in low-risk situations, metal saddles are now often used as the default choice to meet both fire safety expectations and durability requirements.
